How appropriate that a day after Minister Mitchell announces the $4 million Broader Public Investment Fund that the Ministry of Agriculture hosts their first Value Chain Management Forum. Close to 150 people from across the agri-food value chain gathered in Guelph, Ontario to learn about Value Chains, and to listen to best practice examples of what has made some value chain partnerships successful.

A while back I participated in a workshop hosted by St. Joseph’s Group Purchasing Association, moderated by My Sustainable Canada and their partners.  This event brought together almost 60 members of the value chain including hospital and long term care foodservice operators, food distributors, manufacturers and Ontario producers to talk about opportunities and challenges they face in getting more local food into their foodservice operations.

What happens when a former tobacco grower with 40 years experience, a steel company owner, a dentist, an accountant, an entrepreneur and two lawyers get together?

This past year has been a banner year for the GGO, giving them more than a birthday to celebrate. Their hard work has been paying off in dividends, as sales of VQA wines has grown by 40% over the past four years and these uniquely-crafted grapes and wines are gaining prestige amongst Ontario sommeliers and wine appreciators. 

Do you ever drive by an exceedingly beautiful house, and wonder if the people who own it and live in it are aware of how beautiful it is? Does walking up the same path, and opening the front door day after day somehow make one blind to what they have?
