Want to learn more about local food and farming in Ontario?
Durham Farm Connections and the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture launched a mobile education centre to teach Ontarians about local food, farming and agriculture. With the help of a $31,500 grant from the Greenbelt Fund, Durham Farm Connections purchased the mobile educational trailer to travel across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.
Mary Ann Found from Found Family Farms, and her dedicated team of volunteers, friends, family and colleagues at Durham Farm Connections, with valuable insights from members of Durham Region’s agricultural community, have put together interactive kiosks, easy-to-access displays and kid-friendly activities to promote local food literacy and showcase information from Ontario’s diverse agricultural sector. The trailer includes a wealth of resources that could help educate thousands of Ontarians about how and where to find local products, learn more about sustainable agriculture and increase farming literacy for both farming and non-farming regions.
The trailer was launched on August 25, 2016 at the Uxbridge Farmer Night with many Uxbridge and Durham Region residents in attendance and enjoying the local festivities, including Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O’Connor, Oshawa Mayor John Henry, Uxbridge Councillors Pamela Beach, Pat Molloy and Dave Barton, and Durham Regional Chair Roger Anderson.
