The Toronto Star: "Ontario wine sales expected to soar after banner harvest

The economic and weather conditions of this past spring and summer created a perfect storm that left many of Ontario's fruit growers hurting - but not the wine makers.

The Grape Growers of Ontario is anticipating a high quality 2012 harvest to produce some very fine wines for 2013 markets.  This is expected to collide with a gap in supply left by European shortfalls, leaving the Ontario wine industry with its own perfect storm.

“Certainly the amount of wine Europe produces is going to be a lot less; that obviously gets our attention and I hope consumers’ attention in Ontario, to look at some of these superior brands that Ontario’s growing,” said Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of Grape Growers of Ontario. “We can compete with the best of them and our reds will be superior this year.”
