Building Supply and Demand for Ontario Cheese: A Blueprint for Success from Sysco

Ontario’s broader public sector organizations present a sizeable market opportunity for locally-produced foods. Through the ‘Building Supply and Demand for Ontario Cheese’ initiative, funded by the Broader Public Sector (BPS) Investment Fund, Sysco Ontario was challenged to identify synergies with Ontario based cheesemakers, to develop a plan to grow sales opportunities and to remove value-chain barriers among broader public sector institutions and contract feeders.

The program’s goal was to create a more constant supply of locally-produced cheeses, including specialty cheeses, to a variety of BPS institutions. Over a one-year period, Sysco employed a three-pronged approach to increase the use and hence purchase of Ontario cheeses in these institutions.
